Free Income Tax Assistance for Military Personnel and Qualifying Family Members

Legal Assistance AttorneyThe Fort Detrick Tax Center opens January 28 to assist eligible taxpayers with filing both federal and state income tax returns. Active members of the armed forces-including mobilized reservists, military retirees, and eligible family members are able to receive assistance with their income tax needs.

In order to take part in this program, complete the in-take form prior to your visit. This form can be obtained from the Tax Program website, which can be accessed by selecting the calculator icon on the Fort Detrick homepage, www.detrick.army.mil. In addition to the form, you will need to show your military identification card and a social security card (photocopies will be accepted) for each person on the return. Follow the “What to Bring” advice on the website for additional items bring to ensure that your visit is a success.

Overseen by the Internal Revenue Service and managed by the Staff Judge Advocate, the Tax Center was formed to promote readiness and the quality of life for service members. Commanders have dedicated a detail of seven Soldiers to serve in the Tax Center this year alongside civilian volunteers.

Visit the Tax Center and take advantage of this great benefit. The services are free, last year the Tax Center saved the average client more than $250 in commercial fees. Tax Center clients are also guaranteed to receive their refund by direct deposit within seven to ten days after their return is transmitted. The center offers quality assistance from Soldiers and volunteers who are certified under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Each preparer must complete a 40-hour course taught by the IRS and pass four rigorous tests, including ones specifically designed for tax issues commonly encountered by active members of the armed forces.
