Boxing Clinic Stands Up Against Bullying
Shanise Lewis, CYS Sports & Fitness Director
Fort Detrick Youth and School Age Services sports program held a boxing clinic on June 2 titled "Hands Up." The clinic, taught by Staff Sgt. Alexis Ramos of Fort Meade's Cyber Center of Excellence NCO Academy Detachment, is designed to encourage self-defense, self-esteem and confidence through the art of boxing. Ramos, a former boxer and boxing coach of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, shared his story of being bullied because of his name and how that led him to boxing. Children also shared their stories of witnessing and being bullied. This clinic taught the children to take a stand with their hands up against physical, verbal, social and cyber bullying. Children were taught the different types of bullying, why it is wrong and what to do.
