Soldiers and civilians from across Fort Detrick gathered at the Post Chapel April 5 for a candlelight vigil to honor the strength of survivors of sexual assault, and pledged to end the crime that effects so many.

Following the invocation by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Jeffrey Giannola, candles were lit and a moment of silence was held for reflection.

Colonel Judith Robinson, commander, US Army Garrison Fort Detrick then read the proclamation proclaiming April as Army Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which Maj. Gen. James K. Gilman, commanding general, US Army Medical research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick signed.

Following the signing, Ray Wharton, Fort Detrick’s Director of Emergency Services, spoke about the impact of sexual assault and violence, and what he has seen in his years in law enforcement.
Wharton made it a point to thank the unit victim advocates and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention specialists, citing the importance of what they do and, “the outstanding job they do.”
