Before doors opened at Whittier Elementary, Aug. 25, Fort Detrick Soldiers raised the school’s new U.S. flag and heard words of encouragement from U.S. Army Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup.
Each year during the opening and closing ceremonies at Whittier, Fort Detrick Soldiers and leadership make a special appearance to show their support for the local school.
“This is a special event for us. We want to show our support for Whittier Elementary and help motivate the kids to have a good school year,” said Jessup.
Amy Schwiegerath, Whittier Elementary School principal, commented on how much Fort Detrick’s presence means to the kids as well as the staff.
“Normally we see different Soldiers come and go, but this year we are lucky enough to have Command Sgt. Maj. Jessup with us for the second year in a row,” said Schwiegerath.
Following the flag raising ceremony, students and staff members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “America,” a patriotic song originally written by Samuel Francis Smith.
Whittier Elementary has over 900 students and multiple new staff members for the 2014-2015 school year.
