The whipping wind and cold temperatures did not keep the children of the Fort Detrick Child Development Center from coming together to celebrate Arbor Day April 6. Col. Bob O’Brien, Fort Detrick U.S. Army Garrison commander, welcomed and thanked those in attendance and, along with Frederick City Mayor Randy McClement, discussed the importance of environmental stewardship.

The year 2016 marks the 14th year that Fort Detrick, and the 36th year that the City of Frederick, has earned the Tree City USA Award; a highly coveted award honoring communities who have met the 4 core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day. Fort Detrick is 1 of forty communities in Maryland to earn this award.
