History: Over half a century as part of
the community
Since becoming an Army Installation in 1937, Fort Detrick has hosted many important activities.
Through the years, the missions of conflict sowed the seeds of peaceful research.
From an Army airfield in the 1930s Fort Detrick became a center of scientific discovery of the Cold War. With those programs long dismantled, in 2002, the NIBC helped further transform Fort Detrick into a center of scientific excellence on public health.
The NIBC is emerging as a leading facility capitalizing on a strong community, educational programs, and established business relationships.
