Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)

The NIBC is located on scenic Fort Detrick, MD, noted for our stewardship in ecosystem management.

The NIBC lies in the Western Lowlands Section of the Piedmont Plateau Physiographic Province (the Appalachian Highlands) in a geologic subdivision known as the Frederick Valley (USAG, 2003b). The Frederick Valley is developed on Cambrian and Ordovician limestone and dolomite, where gently undulating plains are underlain by unmetamorphosed bedrock of Triassic red shale, siltstone, and sandstone (Maryland Geological Survey, 2005). The Frederick Valley is six miles wide and trends north to south for approximately 26 miles. The Catoctin Mountains form the western boundary of the Frederick Valley.

The Campus is characterized by rolling topography due to the Frederick and Grove Formations that underlie much of the installation.

It is the NIBC environmental policy to incorporate cost-effective common sense stewardship of environmental, cultural, and natural resources into all facets of operations.

The construction of the facilities is done in full consideration of the environment, using the highest principles for "green" construction ("LEED" Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and a strategic plan for sustainability, stormwater management, and protection of wildlife and migratory birds.
