Director, Network Enterprise Center, Russell Johnston, Fort Detrick, Maryland
Russell Johnston is an Information Technology professional with over 20 years' experience working with the U.S. Government. Russell started his career as a summer intern providing systems support for the US Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity at Fort Detrick, MD in between semesters of college. In 1998 Russell was hired as a DoD contractor providing systems support for Fort Detrick DOIM. After a two year stint as Director of Technical Operations for a technical training company, he returned to Fort Detrick again as a DoD contractor in a more technical leadership role, heading up numerous technical projects and deployments. In 2011, Russell became an Army Civilian, first serving as technical lead on enterprise initiatives. By 2012, he was promoted to Branch Chief overseeing the Server Support Team. In this role, Russell managed the delivery of enterprise C4IM services to a range of tenant organizations including the US Army Medical Command, Navy, and Airforce. In 2013 Russell was promoted to Division Chief of the Network and Switch Division with the responsibility for the installation, configuration, operation, and management of the data networking, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and voice telecommunications network portion of the Information Technology (IT) architecture environment supporting Fort Detrick. In 2016, Russell accepted the position of Deputy Director for the Carlisle Barracks Network Enterprise Center supporting the US Army War College. There he served as the primary project manager and COR with a focus in network modernization efforts, system reaccreditation and the migration of public facing academic web content and publications to the Amazon GovCloud environment. Since November 2017, Russell has served as Director of the Fort Detrick Network Enterprise Center.
Russell has a BA in Philosophy and Communications from Salisbury University and MS in Government Information Leadership with a focus in Cybersecurity from the National Defense University. Russell holds many industry certifications to include A+, Net+, MCSE, CCNA, Security+, CISSP and ITIL as well as NSTICCI certificates for INFOSEC Professional, Senior Systems Manager, System Certifier, Advanced Risk Analysis, and Chief Information Security Officer.
