For Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) employment and other NAF information, please check out our NAF section. We also post NAF Announcements on our Bulletin Board located at the entrance to our building.
Feel free to visit our office and pick up various recruitment brochures to assist you in your job search.
Civilians have been an integral part of the U.S. Army since the Revolutionary War. The Board of War and Ordnance was established in 1776 with responsibility to equip and dispatch troops; account for arms, ammunition and equipment; maintain personnel records; and disburse funds.
The board was made up of five members of the Continental Congress, clerks and a paid secretary — Richard Peters, the first Army civilian. Civilians were hired by the Continental Army for driving, crafts, carpentry and laborer jobs.
Today, with more than 330,000 civilian employees, Army Civilian Service is the largest, busiest and most successful "company" within the Department of Defense. Army civilians have skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. We are federal civil servants and are committed to selfless service in the performance of our duties in support of our nation and consider it an honor and a privilege to support our soldiers.

VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTS — Army vacancies and a wealth of information about Army civilian employment may be found at the Army Civilian Service website. The most current and reliable information is available at this site under "Army Job Search". Army also posts job announcements on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) USAJOBS web site. By accessing either of these sites you can view Army job announcements.
All of our announcements, both internal and external, are posted on USA Jobs. Please read the 'Who May Apply' to see if you are eligible to be considered for the specific vacancy. Internal announcements may be confined to Army or Status applicants only, while external announcements are open to all US citizens.
AUTOMATED RECRUITMENT TOOL — The Army is currently transitioning from one automated recruitment tool — Resumix — to another — USA Staffing — for advertising vacant positions, accepting applications from job seekers, and evaluating the job seeker's eligibility and qualifications. During this period of transition, each job announcement will have instructions to guide job seekers through the application process for the specified recruitment tool.
Note: Fort Detrick deployed to USA Staffing for both Appropriated Fund (AF) and Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) positions 30 April 2012.
RESUME — During this transition period, it is recommended that you create a resume in both recruitment tools - Resumix and USA Staffing - at the beginning of your job search. Once your resume is on file, you can easily apply for jobs from the job announcement. The job announcement will provide guidance on which system will be used to submit your resume. You may up-date your resume at anytime; however, it is important to remember that under the Army Resume Builder only the latest resume will be active.
You can create up to five distinct resumes in USAJOBS. You can search for jobs easily in several different ways for various positions at locations throughout the world, including Ft. Detrick.
APPLICATION PROCESS — Although you can search for and apply for jobs announced through either system on the Army Civilian Service website, how you apply and how you check the status of your application will be different, depending on the system used to announce the job. The Resumix system will use the resume you build in the Army Resume Builder, and the USA Staffing system will use a resume you build or upload in USAJOBS (you can have up to five resumes in USAJOBS, but only one in Army Resume Builder). Follow guidelines in the specific vacancy announcement for how to apply.
Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards — These standards describe the minimum qualification requirements (for example, educational, medical, age, experience, etc.) for each occupational series for white collar Federal civilian occupations.
Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations (Wage Grade) — Describes the skills, knowledge, abilities, and personal characteristics needed for the particular job being filled for wage grade positions.
